Franziska Gsell is the Chief Marketing Officer at IWC Schaffhausen and chairs the company’s Sustainability Committee. She discusses what IWC Schaffhausen, a Swiss luxury watchmaker, does to be an environmentally and socially responsible business and how it can create a great work environment.

Franziska: What does sustainability look like for IWC as an organization and you personally?

Everything we do is based on sustainability. Since 1868, IWC Schaffhausen has been making high-quality mechanical watches. Watches are made using innovative technology and skills that are part the cultural heritage of Switzerland. They are built to last generations. Our long-term thinking is key to the long-lasting quality of our products. The new My IWC program, launched last November, has further enhanced this notion of longevity. Every buyer of an IWC watch can apply for an International Limited Warranty extension from 2 to 8 years. We want to make our products as sustainable as possible, as sustainability is a part of the very DNA. Sustainability is also an issue of the heart. It is a great honor to lead our company toward a more sustainable future.

Your journey to work is part of sustainability. We subsidise employees who commute by public transport. We contribute to your point-to-point card if you commute by bus or train. Our new Manufacturing Centre even has its own bus stop. We want our employees to be happy at work. The Manufacturing Centre, a modern production facility, offers great working conditions. It has lots of natural light and ergonomically designed workspaces. We encourage diversity in our work environment. We have many people from different countries at our headquarters. For example, we offer free language classes. Our canteens serve fresh, seasonal food, fruit, and a variety of vegetarian options. We are committed to building a culture of respect and trust in our workplace. IWC was the first luxury watchmaker to be certified by Great Place to Work in Switzerland in 2019. The anonymous survey is conducted online to determine how happy employees are.

Sustainable means to protect the environment. What can IWC do to minimize its environmental impact?

Florentine Ariosto was not only an innovator in centralised production of timepieces when he founded IWC in 1868. He was also a pioneer in the centralised production of timepieces and recognized the potential benefits of renewable energy early on. He used hydropower from the Rhine as a source of power to drive his machines. To this day, we remain true to the ideals set by our founder and use hydroelectric power to provide most of our electricity. Our new Manufacturing Centre generates a portion of our electricity using a photovoltaic panel on the roof. We are also reducing our energy use by using automated lighting control and LED lights. A sensor-controlled sunshade prevents the building's heating from going too fast. Two groundwater sources provide the water needed for cooling and heating. We have made a big difference with small steps. And our efforts are paying off. IWC was rated the top-performing Swiss company in the watch and jewellery industry in a WWF Switzerland report in December 2018. This study examined 15 brands' environmental impacts.

Tricia Montgomery (52), founder of K9 Fit Club knows firsthand the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Her favorite things are eating healthy food and making small, frequent meals. She says, "I don’t deny myself anything." "I still enjoy dessert, key lime pie, yum!" -- I love frozen gummy bears and moderation is the key.


Get regular checkups. Your doctor will keep track of your medical history so that you can stay healthy. If you are at high risk of osteoporosis (a condition that weakens bones), your doctor may recommend more vitamin D and calcium.


You may be recommended by your doctor to have screening tests done to monitor your health and detect conditions before they become serious.


Be open to communication. Meng said, "If you have any questions, ask your doctor." "Ensure you are satisfied with the information." Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about any medication or procedure.


Reduce Stress

It can be very detrimental to your health. It is impossible to avoid it all, but there are ways you can reduce the effects. Do not take on too many responsibilities. Set limits for yourself and others. It is okay to say no.


To relieve stress, try:


Deep breathing

Meditation

Yoga

Massage

Exercise

Healthy eating

Talking to a friend or family member.

Develop healthy habits

You can prevent problems from coming your way tomorrow if you make the right decisions today.


Brush your teeth twice daily and floss each day.

Don't smoke.

Limit your alcohol. Limit your alcohol intake to 1 drink per day.

Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Get better sleep. Try to sleep for at least 8 hours. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.

Keep out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Wear your seatbelt.

Meng suggests that you take time each day to invest in your own health.


Montgomery was able to see the benefits. Montgomery says that she has overcome health issues, is happy, and has a positive outlook. She says that her life has been forever transformed.
